We went to chat to The Flower Seller, a Muswell Hill institution.
Set in the heart of Muswell Hill on Fortis Green next to our beautiful art deco (Grade II listed) cinema, The Flower Seller has been doing what it does best for over 20 years.
Michael and John who run the shop are well-known faces in the neighbourhood and their ethos is simple, supplying a wide variety of good quality flowers at reasonable prices. The humble one storey shop was discovered by Michael 21 years ago, at that point it was a burnt out newsagents. Michael sought out the landlord and created a simple open fronted shop, perfectly suited to selling flowers.
However you may be aware that a second planning application to develop the site has been submitted to Haringey, with a closing date of Friday 24th May 2019. The first application was withdrawn after much public outcry, but sadly the threat has now returned. The developers have changed the plans in an attempt push the planning through but it still includes a further two storeys above the shop and a basement below.
The planning does not just effect the flower seller but also much loved La Dinette next door, Amici Miei 2 Go & Misk London.
If the planning goes ahead the build will take up to 2 years with no guarantee that these local businesses to return as predictably the rents with increase dramatically.
There are already a number of empty shops around Muswell Hill with businesses folding every month due to the pressure of high rent and rates, do we really need more shop spaces that no once can afford, plus more luxury flats that are only affordable for those wishing to buy-to-let.
We would hate to lose The Flower Seller and the other local businesses affected, with fear that this constant development of Muswell Hill will lead to it losing it’s charm, not only architecturally (don’t forget this site sits along side our Grade II listed cinema) but also our independent businesses that are the make up of N10.
